{"id":1547,"date":"2019-03-27T14:40:14","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.apw.gr\/?page_id=1547"},"modified":"2019-04-01T15:04:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T15:04:56","slug":"goran-tomasevic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/2019.apw.gr\/en\/goran-tomasevic\/","title":{"rendered":"Goran Tomasevic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;fadeInLeft&#8221;]Goran Tomasevic (born 1969 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia), is a Serbian\u00a0photographer working for Reuters\u00a0who has spent more than 20 years travelling around the globe to cover the world\u2019s biggest stories.<\/p>\n<p>Tomasevic\u2019s award-winning pictures of wars and revolutions have become some of the most enduring images of the conflicts fought in the Balkans,\u00a0Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya\u00a0and Syria.\u00a0His broad work includes photographic features from\u00a0<u>South Sudan, Pakistan<\/u>, Mozambique, DR Congo\u00a0Central African Republic, Burundi, Nigeria\u00a0and sports coverage of the Olympics and soccer World Cups.<\/p>\n<p>After photographing the wars that followed the break-up of former Yugoslavia\u00a0for a local paper, Tomasevic joined Reuters in 1996, covering the simmering political tensions in Kosovo\u00a0and the anti-Milosevic\u00a0demonstrations in his home town of Belgrade. During NATO\u2019s three-month bombardment of Serbia\u00a0in 1999, Tomasevic was the only photographer working for foreign press to spend the duration of the conflict in Kosovo.<\/p>\n<p>Tomasevic moved to Jerusalem in 2002, covering the second Palestinian intifada. During the U.S.-led invasions of Iraq\u00a0in 2003, his picture of a U.S. Marine watching the toppling of a Saddam Hussein\u00a0statue became one of the most memorable images of the war. He often returned to Iraq as sectarian violence\u00a0escalated and regularly photographed America\u2019s other war in Afghanistan. His sequence of photographs of U.S. Marine Sergeant Bee narrowly escaping Taliban\u00a0bullets became an iconic image in U.S. war history.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1461&#8243; css_animation=&#8221;fadeInRight&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css_animation=&#8221;fadeInUp&#8221;][vc_column_text]Tomasevic moved to Cairo\u00a0in 2006 and was at the heart of Reuters\u2019 coverage of the Arab Spring. In Libya,\u00a0his image of a fireball that spewed up after an air strike on pro-Gaddafi\u00a0fighters became an iconic image of the Libyan war, gracing the front pages of more than 100 newspapers around the globe. Tomasevic\u2019s raw pictures of rebel fighters battling pro-Assad\u00a0forces among the ruins of Aleppo\u00a0and Damascus\u00a0have won international acclaim, as did his coverage of the bloody siege on a Nairobi\u00a0shopping mall in Kenya<\/p>\n<p>Tomasevic\u2019s work has been recognised with many prestigious international awards. He has been named Reuters Photographer of the Year a record four times (2003, 2005, 2011 and 2013) and won the Reuters Photograph of the Year award in 2008. In 2014, he was awarded first prize in the \u201cSpot News Stories\u201d category at the World Press Photo\u00a0and second and third prize at \u201cNews Picture Story\u201d at POYi.\u00a0He has won China International Press Photo of the Year in 2011 and he has been awarded for spot news in 2004 and 2012. In 2009 he won the SOPA Award of Excellence for News Photography. In 2012 Tomasevic won the London Frontline Club Award and in 2013 the Days Japan award. In 2005 he got the National Press Photography Association,\u00a0Best of Photo journalism in the Portrait and Personality category and third place for news in 2011. In 2014 he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prise for Breaking News Photography. The Guardian\u2019s photo team chose Goran Tomasevic as their agency photographer of the year for 2013. International Business Times UK chose Goran as their agency photographer of the year for 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012 the Czech Photo Gallery in Prague held a six week exhibition of Tomasevic\u2019s war photography, depicting more than two decades of conflict.
